Key 2: Among all sources of sugar/sweeteners, corn sweeteners will weigh heavier in China’s future consumption
Sugarcane is planted in southern warmer regions in China, which have limited amount of arable land when compared with the north; and weather condition plays an important role in affecting the harvest of sugarcane. On the other hand, China, as the world’s second largest corn producing country, has an abundant supply of corn for use in corn sweeteners production. Supply of corn sweeteners is therefore relatively more reliable. Since corn sweeteners are substitutes of cane sugar, they could thus easily become a preferable source of sweeteners amid sugar price hike and help maintain market stability.
